Finger millet (Eleusine coracana)

Project information

»The problem
Finger millet is a labor-intensive crop grown by subsistence farmers in India and east and central Africa. Because it grows under marginal conditions, is highly nutritious, and stores well, it helps many poor farmers withstand times of famine. It is susceptible, however, to drought and blast disease.

»The approach
This project aims to improve the ability of finger millet to resist drought and blast. Both conventional breeding and marker-assisted selection will help produce hardier varieties that will suit local farmers' preferences. Although little research has been done on finger millet, both drought and blast are well understood from research in rice and other cereal crops. Through comparative genetics, this information will be used to improve finger millet.

»The goal
To contribute to the food security of subsistence farmers in India through the development of finger millet varieties with good yield and enhanced resistance to drought and blast.
