»The problem
The potato is central to the culture and diet of Andean people
and is fourth among the world's principle food crops. Andean
potato production is threatened by an emerging pest known
as the Guatemalan potato moth (Tecia solanivora; Lepidoptera,
Gelechiidae), whose larvae destroy potato tubers. T. solanivora
is the most serious pest of potato in Central America, where
the insect originated, and it has moved to South America through
the potato trade. It has become one of the gravest problems
facing potato producers in Ecuador and it also poses a serious
threat to potato producers in other countries in the region.
»The approach

The project team will conduct a systematic screening of caterpillar
populations to identify and characterize naturally occurring
viruses in order to find a strain that can be developed into
an effective biopesticide capable of reducing T. solanivora
populations. The research team hopes that they can develop
a biopesticide with a wide spectrum of activity so that it
will also be capable of controlling other species of potato
moth, Symmetrischema tangolias and Phthorimaea operculell,
whose distribution overlaps with T. solanivora in Ecuador.
They will study the population dynamics of these two pests,
map their distribution in Carchi, Chimborazo and other provinces,
and try to identify natural enemies (predators and parasitoids)
of potential importance.
»The goal
To develop a biopesticide from a naturally occurring virus
that is effective against both T. solanivora, Symmetrichema
tangolias and Phthorimaea operculell, as well as
training farmers in its use.
