»The problem
The people of the Chopcca culture live in Huancavelica, the poorest department in Peru, where 84% of the people live in poverty and 62% of the people are categorized as "extremely poor." The main sources of livelihood for these isolated communities are subsistence agriculture and animal husbandry (mainly sheep). Soil degradation is the most critical problem in the area. Crops and pastures have become less productive as traditional land management techniques have been lost and population increases have led to intensification of land use. Farmland is being degraded by erosion and crops are increasingly vulnerable to pests and diseases. Research and development agencies are absent from the area.

»The approach
Year 2 workplan: English || Español
Emphasis will be on improving food security and human nutrition by increasing and conserving crop biodiversity, especially of potatoes and other native Andean crops; improving soil conservation and pastures; and training farmers in integrated pest management. The project will create partnerships between Chopcca communities, research institutions, and development organizations that will engage community members in participatory research focused on increasing agricultural productivity. It will also help the communities to link with appropriate markets for surplus products. Sixteen communities in the district of Yauli and Paucara will participate in the project, along with Federation of Peasant Women in the Yauli district (FEMUCAY), which has 2000 members in 64 base organizations.

»The goal
To improve agricultural productivity by restoring native Andean agrobiodiversity, implementing integrated approaches to soil fertility and pest management to improve crop and animal health, and linking production surplus to quality niche markets.
