Fourth meeting of the CCRP's West Africa Community of Practice

Location to be determined
Description: CoP4-WAf will be held March 2-5, 2010, at Hotel Tenere in Niamey, Republic of Niger. Representatives of CCRP projects in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger will share strategies and plans for their projects and explore topics of mutual interest. The group will also interact with an invited guest on the topic of “Development of value chains to improve farmers' incomes and food security.” During the workshop, project teams will take time to work on issues related to Research Protocol and Data Management with assistance from the Statistics Services Centre (SSC) of the University of Reading (United Kingdom). This CoP meeting will be coordinated by West Africa Regional Representative Hamado Tapsoba. More details will follow as they are developed.

November 16-21
Fifth meeting of the CCRP's Andes Community of Practice

Puembo, Ecuador
Description: CoP5-Andes will be held November 16-21, 2009, in Puembo, Ecuador. CoP5 is the second time “phase III” (2009-2010 and beyond) projects will meet. The projects will build on the learning initiated during the project development workshop in May 2009, and will be able to more concretely plan for the upcoming year and incorporate Integrated Monitoring, Evaluation and Planning (IMEP). The projects will also work extensively in sub-groups around the topics of climate change, production, markets and nutrition to more clearly establish points of collaboration and ability to scale up. This CoP meeting will be coordinated by Andes regional representative, Claire Nicklin.

First meeting of the CCRP's East and Horn of Africa Community of Practice

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Description: The first annual East and Horn of Africa CoP meeting was held on May 22-28 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The meeting was coordinated by East and Horn of Africa Regional Representative Tesfahun Fenta and facilitated by Ed Rege from ILRI-Nairobi. The meeting featured several groups of participants, each of whom was requested to attend for specific portions of the meeting.

Andes Project Development Workshop
Quito, Ecuador
Description: A Project Development Workshop was held from the 1-4th of April in Quito, Ecuador to help semi-finalists from the 2009 call for proposals help to develop and refine their full proposals. In addition to working on proposals, the objectives for the workshop were for the project teams to get to know each others work and to introduce the philosophy and strategy of the CCRP and Andes CoP. The workshop covered topics such as research design, participative methods, innovation processes, and integrated monitoring, evaluation and planning (IMEP).

Third meeting of the CCRP's West Africa Community of Practice

Bamako, Mali
Description: The third annual West African CoP meeting (CoP3 WAF) was held on March 3 to 6, 2009, in Bamako, Mali. Representatives of the six CCRP projects in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger shared strategies and plans for their projects and explored topics of mutual interest. The group tackled the topic of “Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation of Agricultural Research Projects” with the facilitation of Meg Gawler. This CoP meeting was coordinated by West Africa Regional Representative Hamado Tapsoba.

October 6-9
Second meeting of the CCRP's Southern Africa Community of Practice

Maputo, Mozambique
Description: The second annual meeting of the Southern Africa CCRP community of practice (CoP2-SAf) was held October 6th-9th in Maputo, Mozambique. Representatives of the six CCRP projects in Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania shared strategies and plans for their projects; gave presentations about their project’s progress, presented project stations which included posters, leaflets, and products. We thank Dr. Manual Amane of IIAM, the national agricultural research program of Mozambique, for hosting the meeting and organizing the field day in the Umbeluzi area. The featured topic of the CoP2-SAf was climate variability and change, for which Dr. Roger Stern served as resource person. The meeting was coordinated by Regional Representative Joseph Mpagalile and facilitated by Jurgen Hagmann.

Fourth meeting of the CCRP's Andean Community of Practice

Cochabamba, Bolivia
Description: The fourth annual Andes CoP meeting was held July 14-19 in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Thirty representatives of the eight CCRP projects in Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru shared strategies and plans for their projects; explored topics of mutual interest; and enjoyed a tour of PROINPA, a poster fair, an evening cultural exchange, group reports; and visited farmer stations and other displays during a field day held in Japo, Tapacari, Cochabamba. McKnight Foundation Board Member John Natoli; the CCRP Oversight Committee also attended the meeting coordinated by regional representative Claire Nicklin and coordinated by Leonora Zambrano.

Workshop on Statistical Analysis and Experimental Design
World Neighbors, Quito, Ecuador
Description: This workshop was led by Carlos Barahona, a senior statistician at the University of Reading in England. Each CoP project was invited to send two representatives to this workshop. The scope of the workshop was to discuss statistical tools with an emphasis on a free software package, Genstat, to provide hands-on analysis of participants' data and to discuss the importance and various aspects of experimental design. Feedback from participants was extremely positive.

Workshop on the Impacts of Climate Change in the Andes
CIP, Lima, Peru
Description: An exploratory workshop on climate change in the Andes took place April 29-May 1 at CIP in Lima, Peru. A small group of key actors in climate change research in the Andes explored climate-related issues of relevance to existing CCRP projects, allowing the program to identify potential areas for future funding. Dr. Corinne Valdivia led the workshop hosted by Dr. Roberto Quiroz of the International Potato Center. Participants included strategic members of the current CCRP Community of Practice in the Andes, members of the SANREM CRSP in the Andes, and members of the CCRP leadership team.

Second meeting of the CCRP's West Africa Community of Practice

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
Description: The second annual CoP-WAf meeting was held April 14-17 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Representatives of the six CCRP projects in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger shared strategies and plans for their projects; explored topics of mutual interest; and enjoyed two special topics and a field day. Louise Sperling gave a special topic presentation on participatory approaches in crop research. The field trip to the village of Kaya, 100 km north of Ouagadougou, included visits with innovative farmers and to sorghum processing units. This CoP meeting was coordinated by Regional Representative Hamado Tapsoba

Workshop on experimental design and data analysis
Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
Description: A workshop on experimental design and data analysis was held April 6-12 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, for the CoP-WAf. This event was organized at the request of the CoP group based on a proposal submitted by Dr. Bettina Haussmann. The lead resource person was Dr. Roger Stern of the Statistical Services Centre at the University of Reading in the UK. Twenty participants from six projects participated in the meeting and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

Triennial Grantee Conference: Harnessing science for development
Chantilly, France

Description: The 2007 triennial grantee conference took place in Chantilly, France on December 1-6, 2007. Representatives of all active CCRP projects were invited to the meeting. The conference began with a welcome reception featuring a keynote lecture on climate change/variability and its implications for agriculture given by Dr. David Battisti, Professor of Atmospheric Sciences University of Washington. The conference program included plenary research reports from each of the currently-funded CCRP projects, presented in thematic groups; poster sessions and inter- and intra-partnership meetings. Participants also enjoyed a trip into the city of Paris.

First meeting of the CCRP's Southern Africa Community of Practice

Description: This first annual meeting of the Southern Africa CoP (CoP1-Legumes) was held September 25-28 at the Crossroads hotel in Lilongwe, Malawi. Representatives of the six CCRP projects in Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania shared strategies and plans for their projects and explored topics of mutual interest. The "special feature" for CoP1-Legumes was "linking agriculture and human nutrition." Through presentations by Drs. Suzanne Gervais and Agnes Mwangwela and subsequent discussions, the group explored the ways in which agricultural R&D can aid or impede positive nutritional outcomes. Southern Africa CoP representative Rose Mongi coordinated the meeting and Claire Nicklin facilitated the event.

Third meeting of the CCRP's Andean Community of Practice

Royal Inka Hotel, Pisac, Peru
Description: This third annual Andes CoP meeting was held July 16-21 in Cuzco, Peru. Representatives of the eight CCRP projects in Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru shared strategies and plans for their projects and explored topics of mutual interest. The meeting's special topic was risk management. Invited guests addressed issues related to water harvesting, soil health, insect pests and climate change. Claire Nicklin coordinated the meeting and Myriam Paredes facilitated the event. ITDG and INIA put together a fabulous field day that was much appreciated by all.

First meeting of the CCRP's West African Community of Practice

Niamey, Niger
Description: This first annual West African CoP meeting was held March 5-9 in Niamey, Niger. Representatives of the six CCRP projects in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger shared strategies and plans for their projects and explored topics of mutual interest. In addition to exchanging updates and plans among CoP participants, the group interacted with invited guests for two special topics. The first topic, presented by Reading University professor Roger Stern, concerned climate-related challenges. Dr. Stern helped the group to connect with representatives of three meteorological organizations in the region. Steve Sherwood of World Neighbors-Andes presented the second topic on impact pathways, sharing experiences in the Andean region with the W. African group. Mamadou Chétima and Jonathan Otto facilitated the event.

Second meeting of the CCRP's Andean Community of Practice
Quito, Ecuador

Description: The second annual meeting of the Andes Community of Practice took place July 18-21, 2006 in Quito, Ecuador. This meeting, the second of our annual Andean CoP meetings, brought together representatives of the eight Andean CCRP projects. Project teams gave updates on their projects, listened to invited speakers, and participated in site visits to local projects. The field day was organized by Max Ochoa and his colleagues. The workshop was organized by Claire Nicklin (Andes CoP coordinator), Myriam Paredes (workshop facilitator), Rebecca Nelson (CCRP Scientific Director), Max Ochoa (MACRENA), Betsy Campbell (CCRP consultant) , Kathy Rysted (McKnight Foundation representative), and Eliana Suarez (PUMA Foundation).

Legumes project development workshop
Arusha, Tanzania

Description: This workshop involved the 10 project teams that had successfully competed in the initial round of selection for CCRP pre-proposals focused on "Enhancing the utilization of legumes in Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania." The workshop facilitated the preparation of the project teams' final proposals and provided an opportunity for the CCRP team and the project teams to get to know one another.

The participants shared strategies and plans for their projects and explored topics of mutual interest, with a focus on approaches to achieving nutritional impacts. The workshop was co-organized by Betsy Campbell, Alejandro Bonifacio, the PUMA Foundation and the CCRP leadership team.

West Africa project development
Bamako, Mali

Description: A workshop for finalists involved in the West African competitive grants process took place August 14-16 in Bamako, Mali. Project teams that competed successfully in the initial round of selection in the RFP focused on millet- and sorghum-based systems in West Africa met to further develop project proposals. The workshop was co-organized by Dr. Mohamed Ag Ayoya and the CCRP leadership team; Mohamed served as facilitator for the event.

Tef & finger millet: comparative genomics of the chloridoid cereals
Nairobi, Kenya

Description: Members of the CCRP projects focusing on finger millet and tef met at the Biosciences E. and C. Africa facility in Nairobi, Kenya ("BecA,"on the campus of the International Livestock Research Institute). The workshop allowed researchers working on genomics of these two "orphan" crops in the Chloridoid sub-family of the Gramineae (the grass family) to exchange information. In addition, it provided an opportunity for liaison between researchers from India and Africa working on finger millet.

Biennial Grantee Conference: From partnerships to community: the arc of change in the CCRP
Vaals, The Netherlands

Description: The third biennial grantee conference was held November 6-10 in Vaals, The Netherlands. The meeting focused on making the connection between research and impacts on food security. In addition to formal presentations and research updates from the CCRP grantees, three related workshop sessions allowed the grantees to map out their project strategies, elaborate their plans for monitoring and evaluation, and consider issues relating to the concept of "Community of Practice."

Consultation on millet- and sorghum-based systems in West Africa

Description: This workshop served as a broad-based consultation with scientists, government, NGOs and community groups. The consultation was the basis for the design of a focused call for proposals relating to achieving food security for resource-poor farmers in millet- and sorghum-based systems in west Africa. The workshop focused on three themes: 1) enhancing productivity on P-deficient soils; 2) Striga management and 3) participatory deployment of cereal and legume genotypes.

Microarray and Bioinformatics II: Gene array applications and candidate gene identification in rice and other cereal crops
Los Baños, Philippines

Description: This workshop was aimed at providing researchers in rice and related crops with an opportunity to explore new developments in genomics through hands-on work with gene array technologies and bioinformatics, as well as discussions and presentations. The workshop took advantage of the recently-established Gene Array and Molecular Marker Application Laboratory (GAMMA Lab) at the International Rice Research Institute. The workshop involved participants from the Asian Rice Biotechnology Network (ARBN) and CCRP.

Consultation on breeding for adaptation to P-deficient soils in Africa

Description: This one-day discussion meeting included representatives of existing CCRP projects involved in P-acquisition: P-efficient legumes (China/Mozambique) and Cereal roots (Brazil/East Africa), as well as external resources. The objective of the workshop was to explore the idea of an additional project on this theme, more focused on Africa.

The international workshop on adaptation of crops to low-Phosphorus soils in the tropics and subtropics: innovative approaches for sustainable development
Guangzhou, China

Description: CCRP scientists from China and the U.S. involved in the soil projects met to plan and discuss research activities; and to renew existing relationships and form new ones among the participants. A field trip to one of the principal field research sites showed the results of field screening of soybean genotypes, showing substantial genetic variation in crop adaptation to low P soils, which appeared to be correlated with root architecture and is consistent with the premise of the P-efficient legumes (China/Mozambique) project.
